Martin Karlsson

Martin Karlsson is a Professor of Health Economics and Director of CINCH at the University of Duisburg-Essen, a position he has held since 2012. 

He previously held roles at the University of Oxford, University of Oslo, and Lund University. Karlsson earned his PhD from the European University Institute in 2007. He is also a Research Fellow at IZA and a Guest Professor at the University of Gothenburg. 

Professor Karlsson's research explores the causes of long-term improvements in health and socioeconomic outcomes, leveraging historical policy interventions and modern datasets. He also investigates health insurance, ageing, and long-term care, and has published extensively in leading economics journals. Professor Karlsson coordinates the MSc Health Economics program and teaches courses on health economics, inequality in health, and empirical methods. 

Kristina Strohmaier

Kristina Strohmaier is a Professor of Public Economics at the University of Duisburg-Essen. 

She is an applied microeconomist with a focus on questions related to public economics, particularly in the areas of (international) taxation, health, and education. Across topics, she is interested in how institutions and legal regulations (e.g., tax incentives, smoking bans, regulation of professions) affect human behaviour. In all of her studies, she leverages large administrative datasets and applies innovative microeconometric methods to understand how individuals or firms respond to policy reforms. Before joining the University of Duisburg-Essen in April 2022, she was a junior professor at the University of Tübingen.

Daniel Kühnle

Jun.-Prof. Dr. Daniel Kuehnle is Assistant Professor (with tenure track) in Labour and Health Economics at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE). 

He is the current Deputy Director of CINCH, a Research Fellow at IZA and LASER, a member of the standing field committees for health economics and population economics by the German Economic Association, and part of the RGS (Ruhr-Graduate School) Junior Faculty. 

His research interests are in health and labour economics, family economics and early childhood education. His teaching covers courses in health and labour economics, he organizes the CINCH-dggö Academy in Health Economics, and he co-convenes the economics seminar series at UDE. His research has been published in leading journals, including the Journal of Health Economics, Journal of Human Resources, Journal of Urban Economics, Journal of Politics, Journal of Applied Econometrics, and Demography.

Michael Haylock

Dr. Michael Haylock is a postdoctoral researcher at CINCH, University of Duisburg-Essen. 

His work covers the economic foundations of medical donation behaviour, leveraging datasets with behavioural measures such as preferences and beliefs and implementing behavioural interventions to sort stem cell donors on future donation behaviour. He collaborates with DKMS, the largest registry of stem cell donors in Germany, on the behavioral economics of stem-cell donor availability. 

Dr. Haylock teaches health economics classes at the graduate level and co-organizes the health economics seminar. He joined CINCH in 2022 and completed his PhD in Tübingen.

Diem Hoang Xuan

Diem Hoang Xuan is a doctoral researcher within the RTG 2484 on Regional Disparities and Economic Policies. 

She is interested in gender and development economics. She has research projects investigating factors affecting investment in human capital development (such as local political representation or cultural norms) and how changes in economic conditions affect marriage, fertility, and domestic violence. At the department, Diem assists in teaching, supervising master students, and editing CINCH’s working paper series.

Madhurima Chandra

Madhurima Chandra is a doctoral student at the University of Duisburg-Essen and RGS Econ since October 2022. 

Her research interests lie in Labor and Public economics. She holds a Master's degree in Economics from the University of Bonn.

Rebecca Leber

Rebecca Leber has been a Ph.D. student since April 2020 and works at RWI Essen and at CINCH, University of Duisburg-Essen. She holds a master's degree in health economics, and her ongoing research primarily focuses on the German long-term care and hospital sector. 

She teaches applied labor economics at the UDE and works at RWI Essen with a focus on evidence-based policy advice in Germany. Her work on includes optimizing the regional distribution of hospital departments and evaluating new forms of care, such as telemedicine for heart failure patients.

Sergej Bechtoldt

In October 2018, Sergej joined the Ruhr Graduate School of Economics and since October 2019, he works for the Chair of Health Economics. 

He is the dedicated study advisor for the M.Sc. Health Economics programme. Contact him if you have any general questions about the programme.
